Vanessa Cruz

“It’s beautiful when a shy dog slowly warms up to you.”

When Vanessa Cruz joined our Medical Center volunteer team seven months ago, she had no idea how much she’d enjoy it.

“I decided to volunteer at PAWS because of school—I want to study to be a veterinarian. But after volunteering, I fell in love with the place. The dogs are just so adorable and sweet. I love seeing them happy and excited. And it’s beautiful when a shy dog slowly warms up to you.”

Vanessa works as a Level 1 volunteer at our Medical Center in Little Village. She also helps out as a part of our recovery team in the Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic.

“My favorite way to help PAWS is walking the dogs or visiting. I enjoy meeting different dogs with different personalities and bonding with them. And I love seeing them get adopted and finding their forever homes and the happiness they deserve.”

Ever since Vanessa was a little kid, she’s wanted to help animals. That's what makes her a perfect fit here at PAWS.

“I love the PAWS No Kill mission. From staff members to volunteers, everyone at PAWS lets the animals take their time until they are ready to find their forever home.”

While it’s difficult to choose a favorite moment from her time here, Vanessa fondly remembers one particular coincidence.

"I think my favorite story about my time at PAWS is when I meet a few dogs with the same names as my family members, including my name! Whenever I think about this, I always smile.”

Interested in becoming a volunteer like Vanessa? Here’s her advice:

“Go for it! It’s a lot of fun meeting so many precious dogs. And you also meet a lot of nice people who help you out when you need it. PAWS Chicago is an amazing place to volunteer and help out the animals in need.”
