Volunteers of the Month single view | PAWS Chicago

James Horwath

For James Horwath, becoming a PAWS Chicago volunteer was an easy decision.

“I have been a volunteer at PAWS Chicago for a year and a half. I had recently retired, and with extra time on my hands, I wanted to do something good for the community. Being a life-long animal lover, PAWS Chicago was the first choice that came to mind,” said James.

As a Level 2 dog caregiver at our Adoption Center, James helps out in many different ways.

“The tasks that involve direct interaction with individual dogs are the most important to me, whether it be walking, playing, showing, or training. Approaching forlorn and stressed animals with a quiet, gentle, loving, and non-threatening demeanor does a lot to put them at ease and enrich their lives until they find a permanent home.”

James enjoys volunteering at the Adoption Center so much, he’s even branched out.

“Last October, I started assisting at the PAWS medical facility in Little Village, and I continue to work at both locations on a regular basis. During the Covid-19 Omicron outbreak last winter, I worked in the development office assisting with data entry. And from time to time, I also assist as a dog handler with off-site adoption events.”

In fact, James is now such a pro, he’s teaching others.

“Since becoming a Level 2 volunteer last June, I have been mentoring new volunteers monthly.  Recently I have been assisting in transporting animals and participating in media events, such as news broadcasts on WGN and Fox News.”

We’re so grateful James is a part and proponent of our No Kill Mission.

“It is truly a worthy mission. PAWS has demonstrated it is possible to save the lives of tens of thousands of animals while at the same time, finding them permanent homes, assisting the community with animal care services and education, and preventing the breeding of new homeless strays in the community.”

Interested in becoming a volunteer like James?

“There are many varied needs, and you don't have to do the same thing all the time. The scheduling is extremely flexible. The staff are always welcoming. And finally, the animals need you. Don't hesitate. Try it out!”
