Volunteers of the Month single view | PAWS Chicago

Jennifer Lugo

I love being part of the PAWS Chicago family. Not only do I get to play with adorable dogs, I am fortunate enough to volunteer with some amazing people who are committed to making our city a better place.

How long have you been volunteering with PAWS Chicago? What originally drew you to the organization?

I’ve been involved with PAWS Chicago since 2014, when I ran my first marathon with TEAM PAWS Chicago. In 2017, I moved back to Chicago, and was looking for ways to become more involved in the community. I was invited to attend an event being hosted by the PAWS Chicago Professional Board that discussed PAWS Chicago’s mission and lifesaving work – I signed up that day!

Which PAWS Chicago programs/areas do you volunteer in and why?

I love getting to see all sides of the work we do and being part of the mission!  I am a volunteer in Level 2 Dog Town, Medical Center, Off-Site Adoption Events, the Mentor program, an Adoption Counselor, a member of the Professional Board, TEAM PAWS Chicago Shepherd, and I also teach New Volunteer Orientation, Dog Town Level 1, and Adoption Counselor classes.

Do you have a favorite experience or memory from your time volunteering?

It’s so hard to pick just one! I think my favorite part of volunteering is getting to be part of the large adoption events such as Adopt-a-Thon, and being able to see how passionate the community is about supporting our mission. It’s absolutely heartwarming to come in and seeing people lined up around the block, just to make sure our pets find their forever homes.

What motivates you to continue volunteering with PAWS Chicago?

I love being part of the PAWS Chicago family. Not only do I get to play with adorable dogs, I am fortunate enough to volunteer with some amazing people who are committed to making our city a better place.

Do you have any advice for someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?

Do it! Sign up for one of our New Volunteer Orientation classes and learn about the work we do. We have so many different types of roles for volunteers – you will definitely be able to find something you enjoy!
