Volunteers of the Month single view | PAWS Chicago

1. How long have you been volunteering with PAWS Chicago? What originally drew you to the organization?

I've been volunteering at PAWS since April 2015.  I had recently moved to Chicago from Florida and \both of my senior cats had passed away.  I wanted to spend time with cats and dogs so that I could meet my new best friends, and I did!  I chose PAWS Chicago because I heard about the organization before I moved here. I volunteered at a shelter in Guam in the late 90's, and I knew I wanted to be involved with a great shelter like PAWS.

2. Which PAWS Chicago programs/areas do you volunteer in and why?

I volunteer a lot in Transport and Kitty City. I recently earned my Dog Town Level One and I help with dogs and cats at the Medical Center. I've also fostered about 22 kittens (with four foster fails).

3. Do you have a favorite experience or memory from your time volunteering?

I'd have to say my strongest memory was the Transport trip we did to Houston after Hurricane Harvey. People were honking and waving at us as we drove on the highway all along the way, in both directions. Whenever we stopped, strangers would come up and ask us about our mission and some even give us donations on the spot. It was a great feeling. I also love following the animals I interact with at the MC & LPAC, on the website, and get very excited when I see a familiar face get adopted.

4. What motivates you to continue volunteering with PAWS Chicago?

The animals and watching them go from frightened strays to adoptable pets.  I've always been a big believer in volunteering and giving back to the community, but with PAWS I really get more back than I could ever give in the sense of satisfaction, and knowing I made a difference in the lives of animals in need.

5. Do you have any advice for someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?

DO IT!!  If you have any doubts about volunteering ask for a tour of the Medical Center and the

Adoption Center. You will get an idea of just how much PAWS does for the dogs and cats of Chicago. It's an amazing organization and you will love being part of it.
