Volunteers of the Month single view | PAWS Chicago

Debby Shen

No pet? No problem! For one reason or another, many animal lovers are unable to have a pet at home, so volunteering with PAWS is a great way to spend quality time with cats and dogs in need of TLC. That’s exactly why Debby first volunteered at our Adoption Center in 2013 and the strength of our mission is why she continues to generously share her time at our Medical Center as well.

To make a life-saving difference for pets in need, join Deb, and all of our incredible volunteers in helping us build a No Kill Chicago. Learn more about how you can volunteer today!

1. How long have you been volunteering with PAWS Chicago? What originally drew you to the organization?

In addition to believing in its no kill mission, I started volunteering with PAWS in 2013 because I've always been a dog lover and didn't have one at the time.  It was my way of being able to spend time with dogs.

2. Which PAWS Chicago programs/areas do you volunteer in and why?

I originally began at the Lincoln Park Adoption Center serving in Dog Town.  As I became more familiar with the organization and the types of volunteer roles available, I began to branch out.  In addition to the adoption center, I now also serve at the Medical Center caring for dogs and with the PAWS for Life Community Outreach program.  It's been a wonderful experience to see the process from beginning to end and to understand how PAWS makes such a positive impact for the animals and community.

3. Do you have a favorite experience or memory from your time volunteering?

I love volunteering with PAWS for Life and getting to know residents and their pets.  It's wonderful to see how bonded people are to their pets and their appreciation of the services that PAWS provides.

4. What motivates you to continue volunteering with PAWS Chicago?

I simply enjoy knowing that the work I do will make a difference no matter how small.  Also, the staff and other volunteers are awesome and supportive.  Everything is done for the good of the animals or to help the organization operate better.

5. Do you have any advice for someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?

If you have any interest in animal welfare, PAWS is a wonderful organization with which to get involved.  It may be overwhelming at first because there's so much to learn, but don't let that deter you.  By doing it regularly, I have been able to establish relationships, gain more knowledge about animal welfare issues, and push myself out of my comfort zone.  Everyone is supportive and there to help if you don't know something.  Don't be afraid to just ask.
