Faced with financial hardship, families often give up their pets as they cannot to afford feed them. The sad result is that now, more than ever, many more are being relinquished and abandoned.
Through the PAWS Chicago Pet Food Bank emergency assistance is provided to families facing unemployment, foreclosure, or other financial crises, enabling them to keep their pets. This assistance includes the provision of high quality pet food (generously donated by PETCO) and supplies (including cat litter, leashes, collars, cat carriers, and litter boxes) for a reasonable amount of time—until the family is able to provide these necessities on their own. In addition, owners can receive a voucher for free spay/neuter surgeries for their pet.
The purpose of the Food Bank is to prevent people from having to give up their pets. Owners must show proof of financial need and not be looking to adopt or buy a pet with PAWS Chicago’s help in mind. Pet owners must accept in good faith that with the help of the Food Bank, they will be able to care for their animals in a reasonable amount of time.
