Euthanasia Rates at Animal Care & Control at an All-Time Low
Despite a difficult economy, City of Chicago’s Animal Care & Control (ACC), the city impoundment facility, continues to show progress in saving more homeless pets. In 2012, euthanasia at ACC reached an all-time low of 7,463 cats and dogs. The magnitude of this progress is best seen when compared to the 26,394 pets euthanized there in 1997.

Building a No Kill Chicago
City impoundment facilities are where the majority of stray and unwanted animals enter the shelter system. It is critical for privately funded shelters in the community to help the city pound by transferring pets into their adoption programs. In 2012, Chicago area shelters transferred 4,284 homeless pets from ACC. PAWS Chicago transferred 69% of these animals into its No Kill adoption program.
