PAWS Chicago is the city's largest No Kill humane organization, focused on implementing solutions to end the killing of homeless pets. With 5,000 volunteers engaged in every aspect of the organization and with dedicated supporters, the community is engaged in building a No Kill Chicago.
This year, PAWS Chicago will find new homes for more than 4,500 homeless pets through its state-of-the-art Adoption & Humane Center in Lincoln Park, which opened in 2007. The cageless Adoption Center provides homeless pets with the care and dignity they deserve while welcoming adopters, providing them with guidance in selecting their new pet and offering continued support for life.
In 2000, PAWS Chicago opened the Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic, the largest free spay/neuter clinic in Chicago and the nation. Strategically located in Little Village, the Lurie Clinic provides free and low-cost spay/neuter services in under-resourced communities where the majority of stray and unwanted pets originate. This year, PAWS Chicago will sterilize more than 18,000 pets.
The GusMobile Spay/Neuter Van, the mobile counterpart to the Lurie Clinic, was launched in 2011, providing free and low-cost surgeries, vaccinations and humane education, directly visiting neighborhoods where animals are most in need.
PAWS Chicago has been rated amongst the highest 1% of charities by Charity Navigator, the nation's largest independent charity evaluator, for efficient use of donor funds.
In 1997, PAWS Chicago launched the first Angels with Tails, an event that, for the first time, brought together shelters and rescue groups to showcase Chicago's homeless pets available for adoption on the sidewalks and storefronts along Michigan Avenue and Oak Street. That day, many homeless animal lives were saved and the public was first informed that a staggering 42,500 plus dogs, cats, puppies and kittens were needlessly killed in Chicago in 1997 alone.
With this awareness and the resulting media attention, the community became more involved, wanting to help stop this once hidden tragedy from continuing. Since that day, the number of animals killed each year in Chicago has been reduced by more than half.
But there is still much work to be done to achieve the ultimate mission of making Chicago a No Kill city where animals are no longer killed simply because they are homeless. PAWS Chicago and all of the shelters and rescue organizations you see today are working diligently to make this dream for homeless pets a reality.
PAWS Chicago's Adoption Instructions and Fees will apply to our adoptable pets at this event.
