The Director of Development at PAWS Chicago serves as the chief fundraising leader for the organization. Responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive development strategy for PAWS Chicago. This updated strategy should build upon the success of the existing fundraising programs and outcomes while creating new ways of acquiring new, as well as retaining and upgrading current PAWS Chicago donors. This role works closely to support the Founder and CEO, Board and senior leadership’s major gift prospects, as well as directly delivers their own major gifts. Accountable for delivering and/or exceeding annual overall organizational fundraising goals as well as personally delivering the goals and targets of an individual major gifts portfolio. Establish and implement a new Endowment Campaign, aligned within the overall PAWS Chicago comprehensive system of fundraising.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, establish, align goals and targets, and successfully implement and deliver an updated overall PAWS Chicago three-five year, and annual fundraising strategy.
  • Design, establish, align goals and targets, and successfully implement and deliver a new major gifts fundraising strategy.
  • Oversee and actively performance manage the development staff team; responsible for annual giving, corporate donations, planned giving, web-based giving, direct mail and the data-base.
  • Assess the need for and the organizational capacity to hire and oversee a 3rd party professional raising firm; designed the best approach and strategy for planning and implementing a new Endowment Campaign, as part of the overall annual fundraising system of development at PAWS Chicago.
  • Coordinate closely with peer colleagues in the organization who have separate responsibility for corporate partnerships and sponsorships, events management and social media to ensure alignment and coordination of prospective donor outreach and engagement.
  • Work closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors on the cultivation, engagement and stewardship of major gift donors.
  • Develop an updated stewardship program to properly thank and recognize all donors, help them understand the fulfillment of donor intent and communicate the results and impact of their gifts.
  • Design a donor recognition program and provide ongoing communications to build the loyalty of existing donors, inspire former donors to begin giving again, and acquire new donors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 8-10 years of experience in non-profit fundraising, particularly an emphasis and expertise in major gifts fundraising; special focus on endowment or capital campaigns, preferred. Evidence of both personal and team fundraising results achieved as a consequence of the strategic development plans. Prepared to introduce a strong base of donor-relationships to the PAWS Chicago mission.
  • Customer relationship-management experience desired or experience examples in building long-standing customer loyalty desired.
  • Professional experience and evidence of strong and effective relationship-building and/or fundraising with high net worth individuals, private foundations and corporate giving or social responsibility programs.
  • Evidence of excellent spoken and written communications skills, development plans, major gifts fundraising proposals, across a wide variety of areas of fundraising.
  • Knowledge of, passion for, and commitment to PAWS Chicago’s No Kill model and animal welfare, in general.

Special Events Intern
PAWS Chicago, the city’s largest No Kill humane organization, focused on implementing solutions to end the killing of homeless pets is seeking a Special Events Intern.  We are conveniently located in the beautiful Lincoln Park neighborhood in close proximity to public transportation and the Loop.

Dates of internship are flexible.  Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Gift processing in Raiser’s Edge and Sphere for event donations
  • Mail merging and sending of various mailings
  • Flyer and poster distribution around Chicago for various events
  • Assisting with event logistics
  • Assist with recruiting items and organizing silent and live auctions items for events
  • Returning of phone calls/emails for third-party event requests
  • Staffing major events (Fur Ball, Beach Party, Run for their Lives, Animal Magnetism and Team PAWS marathon events)
  • Filing, phone answering and other administration tasks
  • Assisting with creating and formatting email marketing
  • Assist with social media marketing

Lead Care Giver – Rescue & Recovery Center

Playing one of the most crucial roles in the direct care of all PAWS Chicago internal animals, Lead Animal Caregivers are responsible for the daily care and cleaning of all animals in the adoption program within PAWS Chicago. This includes: daily feeding, medicating and cleaning of all animal areas (both dogs and cats).  Also may require walking of dogs if no volunteers available.

Lead Animal Caregivers must be willing to work closely with volunteers/staff.  Lead Animal Caregivers are responsible for closely monitoring and following through with the medication and medical/behavior observation logs to ensure each animal is receiving the PAWS Chicago care standard. They must obey any animal exercise restrictions.

In addition to caring for all of the internal animals at PAWS Chicago, Lead Animal Caregivers are also responsible for ensuring that common areas that are a part of the rescue and recovery area are clean and maintained. This includes: vacuuming, mopping and taking out trash for all kennels and common areas (playroom, walkways dog bathing room & laundry areas).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring the checklist items are done on a daily basis as assigned.
  • Ensuring the housing areas are organized and presentable. The cat room should have matching (as best as we can) blankets, towels, and bedding. The dogs should have a dog house and/or Kuranda bed, a blanket, toys, etc.
  • Animal Supplies Inventory. Notify appropriate individual to replenish stock with adequate notice to maintain a stocked position.
  • Animal Health. Coordinate with Animal Care Manager – Intake or Team Lead Animal Caregiver on any changes observed and as policy directs.
  • Prepare Animals for Sx procedures. Ensure food and/or water is withheld when necessary and proper notice is displayed as requested.
  • Animal Behavior. Ensure information on health or behavior changes are communicated to Animal Care Manager – Intake or Team Lead Animal Caregiver and as policy directs.
  • Cleaning Supplies Inventory. Notify appropriate individual to replenish stock with adequate notice to maintain a stocked position.
  • Be able to drive transport van and assist with transport of animals offsite.
  • Other duties as requested or needed by supervisors.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work one weekend day and holidays.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs and walk/hold large dogs on outdoor walks and on stairways.

PAWS Chicago Adoption Program Internships
PAWS Chicago offers internships for individuals seeking academic credit. These positions are unpaid and operate within the guidelines of each university.  Interns can engage in a variety of volunteer responsibilities including, but not limited to, interaction/socialization with and care of dogs and cats, showing animals to potential adopters, assisting with a wide variety of administrative functions, participating in or leading animal adoptions, hosting training classes, etc.  Students in this position can also learn database management, psychology of matching people with animals (adoptions), special events planning and more. Students will experience the wide diversity of the operations of an animal rescue organization, what goes into making it work and succeed each day. Duties can be tailored to fit into different educational majors and requirements as much as is practically possible.

PAWS Chicago staff can provide mentorship to students in their professional capacities and give students hands-on exposure to this highly-rated and well-respected not-for-profit organization. Interns should share our passion for animals, believe in our mission to create a No Kill Chicago, and be willing to take the extra step. Interns will be asked to commit to a regular, mutually agreed upon schedule, for a minimum of 10 hours per week, and a three-to six-month term of service. All applicants must attend a two-hour New Volunteer Orientation and hands-on training for their specific area of interest, as well as possibly two, one-hour Level 1 Training Courses.
